Chaos Theory's Butterfly Effect

Mexico shook while parts of North America and the Caribbean have been ripped apart and flooded. California, Greece, Italy and the south of France burned. Notting Hill burned. L.A. boasts its largest fire in history, Central America hits back with its largest earthquake in a century, Irma has been confirmed as the most powerful Atlantic Ocean hurricane in history whilst Iceland trembles with the threat of a volcanic eruption. Oh yes, and the sun just released two powerful flares, one the most powerful in over a decade.

Hell’s Rose asked the question how long can this last?

“It used to be thought that the events that changed the world were things like big bombs, maniac politicians, huge earthquakes, or vast population movements, but it has now been realized that this is a very old-fashioned view held by people totally out of touch with modern thought. The things that change the world, according to Chaos theory, are the tiny things. A butterfly flaps its wings in the Amazonian jungle, and subsequently a storm ravages half of Europe.”

— from Good Omens, by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman (American Gods)

“You could not remove a single grain of sand from its place without thereby … changing something throughout all parts of the immeasurable whole.”

— Fichte, The Vocation of Man

“It is through suffering that we are reborn."

— Michael Mooney, How to Become a God
